PayPal Standard Setup

This page outlines how to set up your LemonStand store to accept payments using PayPal Standard.

What We'll Cover

Adding PayPal Standard as a Payment Method

Please refer to the Payment Methods article for an overview of the general parameters available to a payment method.

1. Click the plus button on the Business Settings > Payment Methods page to add a new payment method.

2. Select PayPal Standard from the list of available payment gateways (under the Custom tab), and click the Add Gateway button.

3. On the next page, you'll need to fill out some details about this payment method. On the right side, under the Credentials section, enter the Email address that your PayPal account uses, and PayPal PDT (Payment Data Transfer) token into the fields provided.

4. Toggle any of the additional settings to satisfy your desired functionality.

5. Click the Save button. You will now be accepting payments via PayPal Standard!

Where to find your PDT token

The above instructions refer to a PDT token that you'll need from PayPal. Here is a link to PayPal's documentation that explains how to enable Auto Return and get your PDT token: https://developer.paypal.com/docs/classic/products/payment-data-transfer/?mark=pdt#get-started

Return URL

The “return url” is a required field on PayPal’s side, even though LemonStand does not make use of this setting. We recommend LemonStand store owners put their store's URL in this field (e.g. https://mystoredomain.com) in order to satisfy this requirement.

How to Enable IPN on your Paypal Account

IPN (Instant Payment Notification) is a message sent by Paypal for regular merchant accounts whenever a transaction is completed on their side. This message contains all the data regarding the payment transaction completed by a form user. If these messages stop working, orders in your store's backend won't show up as "Paid" so it's important to ensure this is enabled.

IPN messaging should be enabled by default, but they can become disabled for different reasons. If you stop seeing orders in your store backend, you can check the status of your IPN messages in your IPN history to confirm they are being sent. This will show if they've been disabled:

Here's how you can enable IPN:

1. Log in to your Paypal account

2. Navigate to your Profile and settings page:

3. Navigate to "My Selling Tools" and find the Instant Payment Notifications line and click "Update":

4. Enable IPN messages. Here, it does not matter what the Notification URL is. LemonStand only needs the IPN messaging to be enabled for order fulfillment.
